Prussing welcome back letter
Dear Prussing Families,
Welcome to the 2018 - 2019 school year! We hope you had a relaxing and productive summer. Below are announcements and updates that will support you with beginning the new school year at Prussing Elementary School.
Open House Kindergarten Open House will be Thursday, August 30th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. Parents may bring school supplies as well. Please label the supplies with your child’s name. Open House for first through eighth grades will be on Thursday, September 27th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a brief welcome in the auditorium, and then parents and students can go to their child’s classroom.
Registration Parents can register their children from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Main Office, beginning Monday, August 24, 2018. If you are not sure which school your child should attend, please call 773.553.1000 or go to the CPS website, http://schoollocator.cps.k12.il.us. For your convenience, enrollment forms can be found on the school website.
Supply Drop Off Parents, you may drop off school supplies for your child on on Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Staff members will accept the items from 9:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Supply lists are located on the school website at http://prussing.cps.edu/school-supply-lists.html under Parents/School Supply Lists. Please label your drop off bags with the student's name and room number. We will ensure the items are delivered to the appropriate classroom upon receipt of the supplies.
First Week of School School starts on Tuesday, September 4, at 8:15 a.m. Drop off will begin at 8:00 a.m. Our school bell schedule will remain the same. The school day will begin at 8:15 a.m. and will end at 3:15 p.m. Parents, please drop off your child at the Main Door every school day or Door #4 if you are driving a vehicle. Also, parents will not be able to drive OR WALK through the teachers' parking lot to drop students off. These changes are necessary to ensure the safety of all of our students at Prussing School. Student marshals will assist the primary grade students to safely enter the building and go to their assigned locations. Students will be dismissed at their regularly assigned door at the end of the school day at 3:15 p.m. Also, please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. For safety reasons, animals (e.g. dogs, cats, etc.) are not allowed on school grounds. Attendance at school is very important to ensure that your child receives a high quality academic education. Please make sure that students arrive on time for school every day. The school day begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. (otherwise they will be counted as tardy), and dismissal time is at 3:15 p.m. Children should not be dropped off before 8:00 a.m. There is no supervision for students prior to that time. Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Prussing School is excited to have a very active and committed PTO. The PTO has a number of great activities and fundraisers planned for the school year and is dedicated to embrace our school community to make Prussing a wonderful learning environment for our students. SAVE THE DATE: The Prussing PTO is planning a Back to School Bash on Saturday, September 15th. More details will follow as they become available. We highly encourage you to become a member of our PTO today. School and Gym Uniforms
The Prussing Local School Council approved an amended Dress Code Policy for the upcoming school year. Although uniforms are not required, they are highly recommended. You can find the updated Dress Code Policy at: http://prussing.cps.edu/prussing-dress-code.html.
The gym uniform consists of the Prussing T-shirt, shorts, sweatpants and hoodies in either grey or royal blue. Students may also wear plain grey or royal blue sweatpants (without the Prussing Logo) and a gold/yellow T-shirt (without the Prussing logo). If you purchase a jersey for one of Prussing sport’s teams, you may wear your Prussing sports jersey on gym days. Gym uniforms are available for sale at Schoolbelles Uniform Store. Uniforms are available in store, online, and through their toll free number all year round. Schoolbelles is located at 7254 W. Foster Ave. Chicago, IL 60656. Physical Examination and Immunization Requirements Parents are reminded that physical examination and immunization requirements for Chicago Public School students are as follows: Students entering kindergarten, sixth, and ninth grade are required to submit proof of physical examination and current immunization s to their local school by October 15th of each year. If you have already submitted a completed Certificate of Child Health Examination Form, please accept our appreciation. If you have not met this requirement, please submit a completed Certificate of Child Health Examination Form immediately to avoid exclusion. In addition, kindergarten students, and any student enrolling for the first time in any grade, are now required to have a full version examination. For your convenience, medical and dental forms can be found on the school website. Students entering kindergarten, second, and sixth grade must have their dental examination completed by May 15th of each school year. If your child has not received the required examination and your family does not have healthcare insurance, please contact the Chicago Public School Children and Family Benefit Unit (CFBU). You may be eligible for Allkids or Family Care. Contact CFBU at 773-553-1809.
School Fees In order to achieve the goals and objectives of the Prussing Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP), a school fee is necessary. Materials and supplies are ordered each year to supplement the core program. A fee of $50.00 per student or maximum of $100.00 per family will be required from each family, except for Pre-K students. Payment can be given directly to your child’s teacher or office using cash, cashier’s check, or money order (made out to Prussing School). Sorry, CPS Policy prohibits the acceptance of personal checks. Kindly, place payment in a sealed envelope labeled Materials Fee along with your child’s name and room number. You can also visit the school office to make payment arrangements. Under certain or extenuating circumstances, families may be eligible for an Application For Waiver of School Fees. The form can be found on the school website. Please see Ms. Ramona Rojas in the Main Office for additional information. Please make sure to obtain a receipt when you make your payment to the school. New Staff The following staff members will not be returning to Prussing School this year: Ms. Julie Graham. Our school community will miss her and we wish her well in her new endeavors.The Prussing team would like to welcome three new teachers: Mr. Birt, Physical Education, Ms. Pratt, First Grade, and Ms. Smith, Kindergarten. We welcome our new staff to Prussing School!.
Curriculum and Instruction Prussing has high quality literacy and mathematics programs from Kindergarten through eighth grade aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and will also have a new social studies curriculum this year. Prussing School secured four additional Chromebook carts that contain 144 new Chromebooks dedicated for student learning over the summer. The school now has nineteen Chromebook carts throughout the school.
After School Programs Prussing School is excited to announce that we will have full after school programs again this year! After school programs will begin at the end of October and run through May. More information will be provided shortly.
After Care Programs Registration is open for Right Club, the after school care program at Prussing School. Right Club is safe, comfortable and fun. Homework, fitness and enrichment will be offered daily and your child will become part of a community that feels like family. Sports Teams Prussing School is committed to keeping sports teams at the school and will plan to continue our sports programming throughout the school year. Facilities Prussing School will receiving a new Annex to the school and construction is on schedule. As more information becomes available, we will share it with the school community.
GoCPS High School Account Activation is Now Available The new school year is right around the corner, and for all our 8th grade families, that means it’s also time to take the next step in the high school application process and activate their GoCPS accounts. GoCPS is the district’s new online platform that streamlines the application process for Chicago Public Schools and makes it more simple, equitable and transparent for all families. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Kelly at email@example.com. Applications don’t open until sometime in October, but by activating your account now, you will be able to:
Create a username and password
Create your primary parent/guardian profile
Create profiles for each high school student in your family
Link student data records for current CPS students to the profile
View the programs your student(s) are eligible to apply to
Verify that student records are accurate, and request updates and corrections
“Favorite” top programs you are considering for applications in October
Activation Codes In order to activate your account, you will need to use the Activation Code from a letter sent home with your student at the end of the school year. You will receive the code again in September with the Eligibility Letters. If you have misplaced or did not receive this code, please contact the Office of Access and Enrollment at 773-553-2060 from a telephone number on your student’s CPS student information file to have it reissued. The OAE call center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Application Advice No matter who is activating the account, be sure to enter the name and address of the parent/guardian with whom the student resides. The address for this parent/guardian will be the address that is used for determining tiers, proximity boundaries, and attendance and overlay boundaries. Web Browsers GoCPS is optimized for view on Chrome and Safari web browsers. We recommend using one of these to access the site.
